DOWNTOWN. Dubbed one of "America's Castles," this Tudor Revival mansion was built in 1927 for a local lumber magnate. Today, guests can tour the Paine for a glimpse of tapestries, rugs and housewares used by the original owners. Three galleries showcase rotating art exhibits, and the Paine's permanent collection of 19th-century American and European paintings and sculpture is always on display. Elaborate gardens are as breathtaking as the decor, and during temperate months, musical performances are often staged amid flowers and manicured lawns. The Paine's newest attraction is an interactive children's center.
