NORTH OF DOWNTOWN. In Wisconsin, folks know how to make the most of temperate months. Restaurants like Fratello's ably fit into their plan, especially since you can tie off your boat right on the dining deck. Locals enjoy views of the Fox River as they feast on Friday night's prime rib and Saturday night's fried perch. The house specialty is white chicken chili, and most meals come with a choice of it or a salad. Fratello's has plenty of vegetarian options as well. Even avowed carnivores love nachos with avocado aioli and gourmet veggie pizzas. Weekend brunches feature steak and eggs, frittatas and pasta carbonara otherwise known as Italian bacon and eggs. In addition to alcoholic beers, the brewpub makes its own root beer and cream soda. Smart-casual attire. Reservations suggested.

WEST SIDE. When you're craving a slice or two and the big chains just don't cut it, this place fits the bill admirably. Oshkoshers love the high-energy pizza joint for its casual ambience and tasty pies. There's nothing fancy here just good, traditional thin-crust pizzas served with toppings like pepperoni, mushrooms or even the much maligned anchovy. Delivery is available, and Red's caters events as well. Casual attire.

OUTSIDE DOWNTOWN. Set in a hotel outside of the city center, this restaurant offers food and ambiance that rival downtown's best establishments. Appetizers include crab cakes, blue cheese and mushroom crepes, and a "Wisconsin salad" of baby greens, sliced duck, walnuts and dried cranberries. High-quality Wisconsin beef takes center stage try a tenderloin stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes in a mushroom reduction, or sample a perfectly seared New York strip. Duck, veal Marsala and grouper in cilantro-lime butter are other good bets, and vegetarians can select from the meatless pasta selections. NORTH OF DOWNTOWN. Faro Vitale, a native Sicilian chef, opened this restaurant in 1980, and it's thrived ever since. The food is authentic Southern Italian, which means favorites like seafood marinara, chicken cacciatore, and pasta with white clam sauce. Chicken pomodoro and shrimp scampi are applauded as well, and pasta primavera appeals to lighter appetites. In addition, gourmet, thin-crust pizzas are made to order. For dessert, indulge in tiramisu in the restaurant and take home some cannoli! Take-out available. Smart-casual attire. Reservations suggested.

DOWNTOWN. A location in a renovated 19th-century building tells you that Water City Grill is not a "cookie cutter" restaurant. This fact is even more evident when you peruse the menu. Traditional appetizers get a twist, like egg rolls stuffed with Wisconsin cheddar and mashed potatoes or garlic-and-red pepper hummus served with grilled naan. Hearty dinner salads include the Napa cabbage and teriyaki beef salad or the vegetarian taco salad (one of several vegan choices). Entrees include meatloaf loaded with portobello mushrooms and served with maple-glazed carrots and garlic mashed potatoes. Also delicious is a divine brie and pear sandwich served with baby spinach and red onion marmalade on toasted rye. Smart-casual attire. Reservations suggested.
