In operation since the 19th century and now designated as a World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal runs through the city southward towards Kingston through 24 locks and canals. During the winter months, the Rideau Canal serves as the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink. Warmer weather sees the canal filled with boats and lined with bicyclists and runners.   (© 10Best)

rideau canal
The canal as a whole is one of Canada's most underrated sights. Most locks are beautifully maintained with old buildings and very helpful and friendly staff. If you take the time to look at them and think about how they work, and the fact that this 200km canal was built so long ago without current technology it really is amazing. Nowadays something like this would never be built because it would cost too much but most of it was done manually. Each lock is a lovely park in and of itself.
