Established in 1840, the Byward Market has developed into a major tourist attraction in the past decade, as its collection of specialty food shops, cafés, outdoor merchants, trendy restaurants, and boutiques lures a multitude of people. Byward was decimated by fire four times, yet it adapted and managed to thrive despite these. Summers see a variety of performers and vendors – fire jugglers, mimes, and more than a few maple syrup salesmen – pandering on the street corners.
