Combining the best of small-town and university life, Oxford offers a variety of activities year-round that make it easy for locals and visitors to find their niche in the community. SEC sports events at Ole Miss are among the town's most popular pastimes, and during football season, fans arrive dressed to the nines, picnics in tow, for the home games. Adorned with charming 19th and early 20th century architecture, the town's quaint Courthouse Square District is fun to explore, and many of the old buildings house enticing shops and restaurants. The University of Mississippi campus offers a rich display of architecture, as well, with several buildings on the National Register. One of the university's original buildings, the stately Lyceum is adorned with Greek columns, was built in 1848, and housed a military hospital during the Civil War. Located nearby stands a statue dedicated to James Meredith, the university's first African-American student. Completed in 1859, the Barnard Observatory houses the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, where the Faulkner Conference is held each year, and Faulkner's home, Rowan Oak is managed by the university and open to the public. -- Elizabeth Baxley, 10Best Editor
