An extension of the University Museum, the Pitt Rivers Museum was built in 1885 to accommodate the vast collection of Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers, a lieutenant general who collected these artifacts while with the Grenadier Guards. Today, the museum focuses on anthropological objects, some of which were collected by Captain Cook. The museum also has a collection of musical instruments and hunter-gatherer items on display in the Balfour Building at 60 Banbury Road.
