More about Oxford
The name Oxford is synonymous with education. It evokes images of elite, well-to-do students leafing through antiquated books in oak-paneled libraries. Indeed, the town does much to perpetuate this stereotypical – if not wholly accurate – image. The first colleges appeared in 1167 and now total more than 35, including Christ Church, Trinity, Balliol, and St. Johns. The colleges influence all areas of Oxford life, which has lead to on-going friction between "town and gown." As for diversions, the city has its share of museums, galleries, theaters, parks, and numerous pubs serving up hearty English porter. Travelers to Oxford should visit St. Michael's Church (Oxford's oldest building), Oxford Castle (a former royal residence), and the Old Convocation House (the University's first library). Other interesting sites are the world-famous Blackwell's Bookstore and the Ashmolean Museum, which contains many unique treasures.
