DOWNTOWN.   After decades spent documenting the breadth of desert life, this museum has shifted its focus to the visual arts. Much like its holdings, the museum building is spare and modern. Contemporary American art is the focus, and Californian works get particular emphasis, along with Native American pieces. Among the artists represented are Dale Chihuly, Robert Motherwell, and Ed Ruscha. Affiliated with the museum is the Albert Frey House II, the former residence of a prominent local architect who did much to shape the style of Palm Springs' built environment. Sculpture and photography collections are also strong, and the museum features regularly changing exhibits, a slate of classes and programs, a museum store, and a theater.   (© 10Best)
