OLD CITY. Where do they mix Philly's top martinis? Many folks'd tell you it's at the white-toned bar of Market Street's über urbane diner, The Continental. Without question, the evocative elixirs served up here have few rivals. What's more, they're perfect complements to the global tapas prepared by the kitchen – dishes like beer-battered shrimp and calamari with saffron aioli, grilled octopus or crab pad thai. As for the scene, try to envision a Kubrick-esque take on the diner concept, complete with sleek olive-green banquettes and olive-shaped halogen lamps.

CENTER CITY. This Center City restaurant and lounge made its debut in 2000, and in the years since has done nothing except cement its place atop the list of Philly's most attractive gathering places on or off the Avenue of the Arts. Indeed, the stylish space, which pairs exposed brick walls with cool, contemporary furniture, has become a neighborhood fixture, and many of its regulars are folks who are intimately involved with the arts. Come early in the evening and enjoy a pre-theater feast of Mediterranean and Latin-influenced tapas; stop by bar after the show, and you'll find the mixed crowd is comprised of more than a few pretty faces.

NORTHERN LIBERTIES. This cozy corner watering hole, located at 3rd and Brown, has emerged as a true haven for the more sophisticated palates that live and play in the Northern Liberties. Works by local artists adorn the place's exposed bricks walls, and the selection of poisons is as diverse as any place in town (from Rothbury Estate Shiraz to minty Mojito Martinis). Adding to the spot's wide appeal is a calendar of events that slates weekly Indy film screenings. As for eats, try your hand at their tasty potato pierogies, gazpacho or steamed mussels. Weekend brunch at North 3rd is also a must thanks to a lineup that includes challah French toast, breakfast quesadilla eggs and arugula and beet salad.

SOUTH STREET. Cool, casual and sophisticated, this South Street lounge is one of the places Philly's young and beautiful gather for requisite posing and preening. The lounge area has intimate seating areas with ottomans and comfortable furniture, and the adjoining room features a bar, dance floor and DJ booth. And while the sexy bartenders expertly prepare drinks that are sure to captivate both the palate and the imagination – the Girl Scout, for example, blends Absolut Vanil, mocha-caramel liqueur and crème de menthe – the kitchen serves tasty late night morsels like pizzas, Panini, and a peanut butter and banana sandwich that would've made Lisa Marie's pop proud.

CENTER CITY. Located on the corner of 16th and Spruce, Monk's has been collecting award after award for its outstanding beer selection since the Clinton administration. The front bar normally features an American microbrew or two as well as single malt scotches, small batch bourbons and top shelf tequilas. At the back bar, meanwhile, several hard-to-find Belgian ales like Chouffe Houblon, Augustijn Blonde and Flemish Sour Red Ale are on tap. In case you were wondering, the grub – including daily specials like Rodenbach lamb stew – has been specifically chosen because it complements the international brews.

Airy venue, which sports a tin ceiling, stained hardwood floors and exposed brick walls, serves up a veritable cornucopia of music each week that appeals to listeners from all walks of life. OLD CITY. A post-workday haven for stylishly-clad young professionals, the bar area at Marmont stays busy well up to closing time, as patrons tend to meander over from the restaurant side for a drink or three after downing a 12-oz. NY strip, porterhouse pork chop or rack of lamb for dinner. The scene at the bar is cool to be sure thanks to a sleek design that utilizes sharp geometry, earthy tones and pendant lighting. The bar staff, meanwhile, has done its part to generate buzz, offering up creative concoctions like the Barcelona (Red Fuel and champagne) and the Poundcake (Stoli Vanil and vanilla schnapps).

OLD CITY. It's somewhat fitting that one of Philadelphia's most prestigious hotels, Penn's View, is home to a wine bar par excellence like Il Bar. This handsome spot is set beside Ristorante Panorama, a fortuitous fact because patrons at the bar are permitted to companion their vino with dishes from the award-winning kitchen next door. And speaking of wine, Il Bar and Panorama share a custom-made wine preservation and dispensing system that is the largest of its kind in the world. And while that alone may be worth the visit, the always dynamic wine flights offer reason enough to stay a while.
