CENTER CITY. Neon colored booths lit from within, wavy bamboo walls and ceilings, and funky little tables in the lounge give this restaurant a super stylish, modern atmosphere. You may recognize chef Morimoto from his Iron Chef days, or even from Nobu in NYC. The menu includes a number of entrees, including several dishes from Nobu, but for a truly unique Morimoto experience, you must order the Omakase. Make weekend reservations well in advance, and expect to make an evening of it – this is a dining experience, after all! Omakase $80-120, Chef's sushi/sashimi selection $30-70.

OLD CITY. You know right away that this will be special, from the Zen-like entrance with its wall of flowing waters. Duck and shiitake postickers, lobster fried rice, sesame crusted tuna, make for a memorable meal. After your meal, try the chocolate Bento box for two, a sampler of five unique little desserts. The bar gets packed and stays packed, but don't let the noise deter your mission to enjoy a wonderful meal. Make sure to rub the Buddha statue on your way out. Advance reservations are recommended, especially for weekends.

CENTER CITY. East meets west in this wonderful Fusion Cuisine restaurant owned and run by Susanna Foo, a self-made restaurateur from Mongolia. Going against tradition, Chef Foo uses raw vegetables while seamlessly blending French, Chinese, and European culinary tastes with elegant aplomb. She works magic with dishes like tea smoked duck breast with grilled Asian pears. Desserts, such as white chocolate Grand Marnier mousse and blueberry souffle, are excellent as well. Even her fortune cookies are dipped in chocolate. Reservations suggested.

UNIVERSITY CITY. To label the interior of this Sansom Street Pan-Asian "contemporary" is to make gross understatement. Indeed, this über-cool space by restaureur Stephen Starr borders on futuristic. White acrylic tables, intimate pod-like booths, sculpted plastic and molded rubber and screens that play sequences of Asian videos – Yes, Gene Roddenberry would have been delighted. The fare, too, is cutting edge, and diners should expect full-on sensory overload from artistically-presented dim sum, sushi platters and stir-frys.

UNIVERSITY CITY. This restaurant melds French and Thai cuisine resulting in dishes that are prepared with zesty spices, soothed with wonderful sauces, and served with creative flair. The interior is sparse and simple, which allows all the focus to be on the food. Bring your own alcoholic beverage if you like, it's allowed. Reservations suggested. Business casual attire.

CHESTNUT HILL. Poll the folks who live in and around Chestnut Hill, and they'll no doubt inform you that their neighborhood is home to one of the Philly area's top sushi joints, a Pan-Asian gem called Osaka. Here, the open dining room is dressed in contemporary Eastern aesthetics, meaning it's a clean-lined space that is stylish yet surprisingly comfortable. The fare, meanwhile, appeals to both seasoned and novice palates – that is to say, in addition to live scallops and sea urchins are more familiar offerings like Kobe rib-eye and salmon rolls.

CHINATOWN. Vietnam remains a warm, family-run operation at heart even though the humble confines that served as its original (1984) location were traded for more stylish, bistro-inspired digs. And while the dark-stained woods and shuttered windows are nice upgrades, it's still all about the food. From the BBQ platter to the Vietnamese carpaccio, nobody'll fault you for filling up on appetizers. Doing so, though, risks having room to sample a vermicelli dish or a claypot filled with pork, fish or shrimp. Fortunately, you can always come back if you feel you missed out. On Friday and Saturday nights, loungey Bar Saigon on the third level opens for business.
