DOWNTOWN PHOENIX. A wonderful complement to the Phoenix Art Museum, this enviable cafe mesmerizes diners with all sorts of good things. The menu makes use of fresh, local ingredients, proffering sandwiches, salads, and a handful of main-course offerings. Among the options: Maryland crab cakes with remoulade sauce, pesto shrimp salad, strawberry chicken salad, and a pepper-crusted beef tenderloin sandwich. Homemade desserts are an added delight, and afternoon tea provides a more-than-genteel experience.

WEST PHOENIX. Put on your cowboy gear, and keep an eye out for a sign bearing the visage of an enormous longhorn. It sets the tone for the restaurant's Western decor and for the waitstaff, who speak the tongue of the old time wrangler. Steaks are juicy, service is friendly, and the atmosphere is exciting. Plus, the place has been making hungry locals happy since 1956! Beyond the 24-oz. porterhouse, the menu boasts pork ribs, barbecue, burgers, sandwiches, and even chicken fried steak.

Sit outside on the patio and enjoy a beautiful sunset, or dine inside and check out the cityscape through huge picture windows. The menu highlights fruits and vegetables grown right on the premises; resultant dishes include milk-fed lamb chops, truffle grilled prime filet mignon, and butter-poached Maine lobster. A perfect place for celebrating a special occasion or for a quiet, romantic dinner. The vast wine list demands to be explored.

A local lunch fixture for decades, this upscale deli tempts folks with a wide assortment of gourmet soups, salads, and sandwiches. Hot and cold offerings come with a choice of bread and toppings; they feature albacore tuna, maple-glazed ham, smoked duck breast, and Italian salami. Add in a side of potato salad, cole slaw, or seafood salad for extra flavor. The Duck also offers beer and wine and sells specialty foods to enjoy at home. A shaded outdoor patio with a fountain is particularly appealing come midday.

BILTMORE. Although part of a national chain, this restaurant is amazingly good. It's not difficult to get in, but there's often a wait for a table, given its popularity. To pass the time, hang out at the bar and enjoy the relaxed ambience and diverse clientele. Then, sink back into a deep booth amid dark woods and brick, and try to figure out what you'll eat from their strong menu. Steaks, fresh fish, roasted chicken, burgers, and salads are among the possibilities. Great for business lunches and after-work drinks too.
