DOWNTOWN. Come in any evening at Tambellini's (located in the heart of the Pittsburgh Cultural District), and you'll find plates piled high with thinly sliced and breaded zucchini sitting on almost every table. Tambellini's is as famous for its treatment of squash as it is for its traditional Tuscan fare, and folks can't stop by without ordering it. Add in reasonable prices and waitresses who've worked at the restaurant since its beginning, and you'll see that Tambellini's doesn't disappoint as either a pre- or post-theater dinner spot.

SOUTH SIDE. The menu tells of Tessie Mae Hullficker, a woman who turned the family service station into a restaurant to serve her favorite TV dinners and BBQ. Indeed, Double Wide Grill does have a "TV dinner" served on a metal, divided tray, but don't be fooled – the food is nothing like microwave dinners. On weekends, for example, brunch offerings include the mammoth-size Trucker Breakfast (two eggs, meat, and home fries) as well as huevos rancheros, steak & eggs, and the self-explanatory Large Stack O Pancakes.

3. Mineo's Pizza House

SQUIRREL HILL. Locals say that Mineo's has the best pizza in "the Burgh." Choose from toppings like pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, feta, ricotta, roasted peppers, and shrimp, or for a twist, order a white or Sicilian pie. Be sure to bring cash – like many other places in the city, they don't take credit cards (there is an ATM in the store). BYOB.

STRIP DISTRICT. Primanti Brothers is probably the most famous restaurant in Pittsburgh, and its main location is open 24 hours to satisfy even the most dire of sandwich cravings. Their claim to fame is creating an entire meal in a sandwich – in addition to meat, you get fried potatoes and Pittsburgh-style coleslaw (no mayo) right on the sandwich. Regulars suggest the double egg (surprisingly good early in the morning!), pastrami, and cheese steak versions to get an authentic taste of this Pittsburgh favorite.

5. Grand Concourse

STATION SQUARE. This historic landmark was once the P&LE Railroad Station, and now offers some of Pittsburgh's best dining with a view. The main room, with grand arched ceiling, is inspiring and usually reverberates with chit-chatty diners. There are also several smaller (and quieter) rooms available. One is able to sit riverside with a good view of Downtown and Point Park. The menu is centered on seafood, as well as steaks and homemade pastas. Music regularly. A must while in Pittsburgh!

MT. WASHINGTON. One of Pittsburgh's best restaurants, this elegant five-star restaurant boasts wall-to-wall windows that provide a majestic view of the city. Lovely Continental dishes like lamb osso buco – marinated with seasonal herbs and served with roasted vegetables on a bed of truffle risotto – highlight the menu, while steak Diane and chateaubriand (beef tenderloin with vegetables) served tableside make magnificent spreads. For dessert, try the soufflé du jour, or splurge for a splendid baked Alaska.

BLOOMFIELD. Tessaro's serves complete lunch and dinner menus, but its burgers draw Pittsburgh natives to the festive eatery. These whoppers are full half-pounders, cooked to order. Every topping imaginable can be had, from traditional offerings (fresh tomatoes and sharp cheddar) to non-traditional options (Russian salad dressing). Regulars swear that Tessaro's hardwood grill gives the burgers their distinctive flavor. In 2000, the Pittsburgh City Paper awarded Tessaro's "Best Hamburger" in the city.

STATION SQUARE. Locals warn that you should call Buca di Beppo several days in advance for reservations – this fun Italian eatery is that popular. This is a great place to go with the family or a group of festive pals. Meals are served family style, so be prepared to dig in for your share of their signature chicken cacciatore, traditional baked ravioli or savory seafood pasta. Don't miss the garlic bread or the prosciutto and Gorgonzola salad, and of course, save room for Pittsburgh's best cannoli.

9. Georgetowne Inn

MT. WASHINGTON. Grandview Avenue offers several wonderful dining solutions with great views of Downtown. Georgetowne's English Tudor façade welcomes you to enjoy great American food in a very casual, Colonial-style setting with wrap-around windows.

SHADYSIDE. Pamela's pancakes are world-famous. Well, maybe not world-famous, but locals swear by them. Other items on the menu at this sought-after joint are California French toast and homemade corned beef hash. Sunday breakfast is the most popular meal.
