- Get a wee bit of the luck of the Irish right here in Pittsburgh! The city's St. Patrick's Day Parade is the second largest in the world -falling short only to the celebration in New York. Each of these parades is bigger than any held in Ireland!
- When it comes to eating, Pittsburgh's got you covered! The city has more restaurants per capita than any other city of comparable size in the US. Specialties of international and regional fare abound. But be sure to try some of the local favorites you're not likely to find foods like these in your neck of the woods!
- Pittsburgh was the hometown of world-renowned artist, Andy Warhol. A renovated warehouse, built in 1910, houses more than 500 pieces of the artist's pop art. This museum is the largest in the country dedicated solely to the works of one artist.
- With or without an H? Just to make things easier for mapmakers, the US Board of Geographic names ruled in 1891 that town names ending in "burgh" should drop the "h" in order to keep things consistent. Refusing to change the spelling of Pittsburgh, the residents successfully petitioned the board in order to keep the "h". The rule was implemented nationally, except in Pittsburgh.
- For a full view of the city, hop on the Duqusne Incline for a trip to the top of Mount Washington. The incline's cars are the oldest mass-transit vehicles in daily operation in America.
- Bridges, bridges and more bridges! Since Pittsburgh has three rivers among its natural terrain, bridges are necessary in order to make connections! There are 2,000 bridges in Alleghany County alone!
- You might be surprised to know that Pittsburgh is home to one of the ten Hindu temples found in the US. The Sri Venkateswara Temple provides free guided tours by appointment only.
- It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! WQED, the public education station that made Mr. Rogers a household name, is located in Pittsburgh.
- Buying a 6-pack of beer in Pittsburgh can be quite an experience. Beer is sold by distributors in cases only. In order to purchase beer on Sunday or by the 6-pack, you'll have to head to one of the bars or restaurants that sell "beer-to-go." There is a catch, though! You can buy only one 6-pack at a time. However, you can buy a maximum of four 6-packs a day but in order to do so, you have to leave the store and return.
- Okay, sports fans! There are plenty of choices in Pittsburgh when it comes to athletic action but finding a ticket can be a problem. The Steelers' fans are especially serious about their games since they are waiting on the "one for the thumb" the ring that would signify the team's fifth Super Bowl win. Every home game has been sold out since 1972. But don't be discouraged, at least give ticket buying a try. You might just get lucky!
