First-rate cuisine is this restaurant's hallmark, as exemplified by their gourmet sandwiches and continental-styled entrees. So it is with their fabulous desserts, which have achieved almost legendary status in town. You never knew that sugar and flour could reach such heights until you yield to the temptations of Papa Haydn's dessert menu. At more than two pages, it's full of sinful treats that you'll agonize over. Should you have black velvet mousse? How about raspberry chocolate terrine? No matter which pie, cake, pastry or torte you ultimately select, it's certain that you'll go into paroxysms of delight after the first bite. Just give in, though. There'll be exercise bikes tomorrow. Some of their sauces are even available in jars to take home. Second location on east side: 5829 SE Milwaukie Ave, Portland, OR 97202; 503-232-9440.

The delicious gem known as Pearl Bakery offers some of Portland's best and most elaborate baked goods. From hearty Italian breads to fine French pastries, simple baguettes to Basque tarts, the bakery is absolutely worth a stop. Savory, gourmet sandwiches (such as gorgonzola, pear and arugula on walnut bread) feature Pearl's incredible loaves, and locals go wild for fruit danishes and Sicilian fig cookies. The shop has limited seating, so you might want to get your munchies to go. For a reasonable price, you can skip off with a tasty snack or lunch treat and a cup of fragrant coffee, too.

Set in an old home, unmarked by signage, this much-loved coffee house has been a haven for Portland residents. Its owner, Goody Cable, has an unconventional approach to business and lets the place create its own niche. Most nights, you'll find live classical music and quiet conversation. Desserts are absolutely scrumptious, including the sinful mocha fudge cake and the lemon chiffon. Couple them with a latte or a pot of herbal tea, and you'll find peace of mind, if just for a fleeting moment. The place maintains a cast of regulars who crave the ambience. They'll also let you in on the secrets of the bathroom and the mystery furniture, but only after you've experienced them.

A perfect hangout throughout the day, Utopia is a treasure of a cafe. Its Belmont neighborhood has been trendy for a few years but hasn't lost its character or its heart as a result of its popularity. Utopia is the same way. You can find other coffee houses on the street, but nothing will feel as real. Here, you can nurse a coffee drink, sample a fragrant cup of tea, dig into a luscious slice of cheesecake, or sample the scones and biscotti. The whole time, you'll feel welcomed and relaxed. Inside, you'll find magazines to leaf through, and outside, the patio grants a breath of fresh air. You'll even enjoy live music on the weekends. It's everything a coffee shop should be.
