Alas, the legacy of those dreary Moors! We're talking about fado: literal translation – fate, the sad state of yearning and mourning that which has been lost. This is called saudade. The oddest sight that you will ever see is when the radio stations play the Queen of Fado, Amalia Rodriguez, and every car pulls off to the side of the road so passengers can shed a tear of regret to the accompaniment of a 12 string guitars' mournful wail. It seems as if this uniquely Portuguese appreciation for sorrowful songs is an acceptance of the power of fate. You can hear fado music just about anywhere in Porto.
