The Square Tower was crucial during the civil war of 1642 when the troops at Portsmouth surrendered to the Commonwealth. During the war, it was used to house gunpowder for military forces. The Round Tower was built to defend the entrance to the Portsmouth harbor. Commissioned by Henry V and completed in 1418, the tower offers a scenic view of incoming ships and harbor traffic from the top of the structure.
