10 Travel Tidbits About Travis
  • Advice on how to have a great trip: use your vacation days, and don't cram umpteen cities into your itinerary. Take some time to get to know a city. If you visit a city often, try staying in a new neighborhood and spend the weekend exploring only that area - feel like a local.
  • Most addictive taste treat: fried oysters and raw seafood
  • Most exotic food and location: not exotic - but a delight: while hiking between towns in Cingue Terre, Italy, along a path of lemon trees, rosemary, and cardoons, we came across a little man selling small cups of Limoncello. Straight from his kitchen to us!
  • Traveled to more than 200 cities, and 25 countries including: Belize, Canada, Cuba, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Guatemala, Italy, Jamaica, Latvia, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Vatican City (smallest nation in Europe), San Marino (third smallest nation in Europe), Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, USA
  • Favorite international destination: Turkey-- beautiful countryside, charming people, inexpensive
  • Best part of travel: meeting local people, making new friends, and getting to see a town through the eyes of a local. The un-planned moments, such as enjoying dinner in the private garden of an onyx salesman in Turkey. Filing a police report in Guatemala where the clerk pounds away at a manual type writer and breast feeds at the same time.
  • Favorite small town: Columbus, Indiana. The small, rural town of Columbus has come to have an unusually large number of notable public buildings and sculptures, designed by such individuals as Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier. Columbus is ranked #6 in the U.S. for architecture innovation and design
  • # 1 place on "to see" list: the Pyramids in Egypt
  • Other interesting travel-related experience: While in Guatemala, I traveled on public busses, the type that had "Iowa Public Schools" still visible on the sides. On the way to Chi-Chi for market day, more and more people climbed aboard at every stop. Half-way into the trip - with people hanging from the metal rack on top of the bus, chickens, and a dog in a burlap bag - I counted 53 people in the last three rows of the bus. Remember, these are already small seats made for 10 year olds.
  • Tip for world travelers: strive to leave the world a better place
