KINGSTON. Built at the turn of the 18th century, this large frame home was George Washington's residence when the Continental Congress convened in Princeton. Washington, his wife, a handful of soldiers, and servants kept residence at Rockingham from August to November of 1783. Here, the general learned that the Treaty of Paris had ended the Revolution, and here, he penned his "Farewell Orders to the Armies." By the 19th century, the home was used as housing for quarry workers, and in the mid-20th century, attempts at preserving it began. It was moved near the Raritan & Delaware Canal in 2001, and in 2004, Rockingham opened as a restored, living history museum.
