PRINCETON. Site of the Battle of Princeton in 1777, this park is now recognized as a national historic landmark. American victories here helped raise spirits for the cause of independence, and General George Washington proved his leadership abilities to the fledgling nation. The Mercer Oak, which gave Princeton Township its symbol and was where General Hugh Mercer rested while mortally wounded, stood here for nearly 300 years until it fell in 2000. Also on the site are the Clarke House (where Mercer died), soldier graves, and a stone colonnade designed by the architect of the national Capitol. Nearby is forested land, complete with hiking trails.
