About Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador is, in many ways, the land that time forgot. This is the place where western civilization first touched North America, the land of Leif Ericson and the Vikings. L'Anse aux Meadows is the oldest known European settlement in the new world, dating back some 4000 to 5000 years, where you can explore now and learn about those early settlers. A part of that history is still visible outside of L'Anse aux Meadows National Historical Site as well, every time you look at one of the amazing icebergs floating along the Labrador Current. Newfoundland and Labrador is the best place in the world to see icebergs, particularly in late spring and early summer. In fact, guests on the Titanic saw too much of an iceberg when the great ocean liner sank off the coast of Cape Race. Want to see more wonders off the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador? There's nothing more wondrous that the sight of a majestic 36-ton humpback whale jumping from the water. Humpbacks are only one of the 22 species of these ocean mammals that make their home in Newfoundland and Labrador every year. And that's to say nothing of the 35 million seabirds that call these rocky cliffs home. Bird watching is a consuming pastime here, and Bird Rock in Cape St. Mary's is only one of many draws to the area. Other outdoor activities abound as well, including golf, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, sailing, skiing, snow-mobiling and berry picking. Or simply follow one of the many scenic drives, whether searching for lighthouses, following the rocky shore, or tasting the best seafood, there's much here to explore.
