Lake Havasu City, AZ

Driveable from Phoenix, Flagstaff, Yuma, and Tucson; and Las Vegas, NV

Constant sunshine and soaring temperatures are perfect fodder for sun-worshippers, and Lake Havasu touts both of them mightily. The town on the Colorado River is known for waterborne revelry, whether it derives from rambunctious Spring Break-ers or year-round recreational enthusiasts. With tons of rental places on offer, vacationers can buy into their own water adventures, courtesy of borrowed jet skis and pontoon boats. In addition to aquatic pursuits, golf and desert tours number among the reasons to sojourn at Lake Havasu. The town also – and somewhat incongruously – lays claim to the London Bridge (1831 vintage, anyway), which was shipped overseas and reassembled in Arizona in 1971 after threatening to sink into the Thames. Beneath its arches lies English Village, a Tudor-style shopping and dining mecca that pays tribute to the bridge's origins and is a civic gathering place.

Micanopy, FL

Driveable from Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Miami

Longing for a return to small-town America, complete with tree-shaded streets and an unhurried pace? This venerable community in North Central Florida, reputed to be the state's oldest inland settlement, takes delight in its irresistible tourist appeal, buoyed by eclectic shops that proffer antiques, crafts, whimsical art, and collectibles. Present in the area too are friendly cafes, natural springs ideal for swimming, parks and gardens, and an almost palpable sense of history. Feed the desire for tradition and time-tested graciousness by booking a room at the Herlong Mansion, a local treasure. This Greek Revival bed and breakfast plies guests with antiques, period charm, and classic Southern hospitality, and it serves a delectable morning meal that's reason enough to stay. And should you need more cause for a Micanopy visit, nearby Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park promises some of the area's best alligator sightings – if you dare!
