PUERTO PLATA. Fort San Felipe, built in the late 16th century, is one of the New World's oldest forts. Spaniards originally used it to defend against marauding pirates who swept the coasts of area islands, and in the early 20th century, it was used as a prison by dictator Trujillo. Today, tourists stand in awe of its eight-foot-thick walls and the clever construction that made it a true bastion of defense.
