You'll find Lake Wheeler due south of downtown Raleigh, past the NCSU Farms. This idyllic recreational lake offers some of the best fishing in the area (you must have a license!). A day spent at Lake Wheeler Park is a popular afternoon destination for those in the Raleigh area. Boat traffic and water-skiing are allowed on the lake, and the park office also rents out johnboats and canoes.   (© 10Best)

Lake Wheeler is a great small park setting for taking the family for an afternoon of fishing from the bank (designated areas), picnicing, or boating/canoeing/sailing. There is a nice "club house"/outdoor deck area with chairs to watch the action or simply relax. Bathrooms are always clean. Boat rentals available. Lake is good for boats up to about 20-22' (above that it is almost too small). You can certainly launch something larger on one of four ramps, but given the 4-5 mile length and 1 mile width of the lake, you'll soon find yourself doing circles. Lake is best for smaller boats/fishing boats. No personal watercraft are allowed. Sailing is also great (usually plenty of wind) for trailer boat sailors. A great place to spend a few extra hours when watching the kids! Swing sets and sand volleyball court are also available for use.
