DOWNTOWN. As the name indicates, wine is a big draw here, and you can order by the flight and sample up to three choices. What goes better with wine than cheese? Choose any three from a vast list that includes Epoisses, Gorgonzola, Brie de Melun and Chimay. small plates are great for smapling with wine – try the pâté with grain mustard, deviled eggs, Vietnamese marinated cucumbers, and pommes frites. Entrees include seared scallops with marinated tomatoes and stone-ground grits, roasted chicken with crispy okra, and ribeye with olive butter and arugula. Known simply as Vin to the locals.

NORTHWEST RALEIGH. North Carolina's premiere art museum, the NCMA has over 181,000 square feet of exhibit space divided into numerous galleries. The well-known European collection includes works from artists such as Claude Monet, Sandro Botticelli, and Peter Paul Rubens. Several galleries devoted to American artists feature works from such luminaries as Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Stella, and Jacob Lawrence. Additional galleries present Oceanic, African, and Jewish ceremonial art. A popular restaurant and a museum shop are located on the premises. The museum's 100-acre park is compleet with a walking trail, sculpture installations, and an amphitheater.

HILLSBOROUGH STREET. A local standby, this joint serves up juicy burgers, fries and shakes. Hungry fans, lured by the tasty eats and nostalgic atmosphere, order at the counter and scarf down the tasty eats at picnic tables. To get the biggest bang for your buck, order the half-pound hamburger steak, fries and a drink, all for six bucks. However, if beef doesn't appeal, there's always grilled cheese, hot dog or grilled chicken. Don't plan to linger, as others will be eyeing your table.

DOWNTOWN. Built in 1840 at a cost of three times the state's annual income, this marvelous example of Greek Revival architecture once housed all of North Carolina's state government. The impressive marble statue of George Washington in the rotunda is a replica of the actual piece that Antonio Canova created in 1820. Guided tours available.

Held in October, this 10-day event features live entertainment, livestock, music, arts and crafts. Among the highlights are the action-packed demolition derby and BMX stunt show. Children of all ages enjoy watching the magic show and visiting historic craft booths in the "Village of Yesteryear." Each night, activities draw to a close with fireworks. Rides cost 2-6 tickets each.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE FAIRGROUND. The RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) Center is home to the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. Holding up to 21,000 people, it also serves as the home court for North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball. Other scheduled events include concerts, conferences, trade shows, and circuses. The Arena Club is also located here, with 9000-plus feet of meeting space. Tickets for events may be purchased at Ticketmaster venues throughout the Raleigh-Durham area.
