DOWNTOWN.   Soft tan banquettes and a mahogany counter line this beautiful Asian restaurant and cocktail bar, frequented by downtown professionals. Drawing inspiration from Chinese and Vietnamese cooking, the kitchen serves up tantalizing bites. Try a combination of small dishes such as Mandarin hot and sour soup and an order half-fried dumplings, or spring for the full-sized ginger lamb served over crispy rice noodles. One look at the contemporary design, and you'll wonder if this restaurant was plucked from an uptown urban center and plopped into a slot of North Carolina's capital city. Owner and chef David Mao has been a fixture in the town's restaurant scene for more than 30 years. Raised by Chinese parents in Vietnam, David blends the two culinary cultures of his heritage. A scan of the appetizers reveals this fusion with Chinese half-fried dumplings, hand-rolled daily by David, alongside the light and crispy spring rolls served with a Vietnamese dipping sauce.
