RAPID CITY. A short distance from Rapid City stands one of the nation's greatest monuments – Mount Rushmore. The massive project was formally dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1927; sculptor Gutzon Borglum, a student of Rodin, labored on it until his death in 1941. The memorial features the faces of presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt – all men who advanced the American ideals of liberty and democracy. A museum documents the creation of the monument, and the sculptor's studio details Borglum's works and plans. The evening illumination of the mountain is an event that shouldn't be missed.
