CRAZY HORSE. In 1948, Lakota elders asked sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to create a monument of similar significance to Mount Rushmore honoring Native Americans. Crazy Horse, the warrior who defeated Custer, was selected as subject matter and was to be carved in the round from a granite mountain. Although Ziolkowski died in 1982, his family carried on his work without state or federal funding and finally completed Crazy Horse's head in 1998. The rest of the work is still in progress, and visitors can watch the blasting and sculpting throughout the year. Also available is an Indian museum, gift shop, restaurant, cultural center, and sculptor's studio. Special events hosted regularly.
