RAPID CITY. When these caverns were discovered by prospectors in the late 19th century, a whole world of underground spectacle was opened – and a tourism industry as well. Cloaked in calcite crystals, the caverns also feature a variety of stalactites and stalagmites. A half-hour tour showcases the crystals and discusses how they were created, while an hour-long tour takes folks on all three levels of the caverns and presents more detailed formations. Jackets and sturdy shoes are recommended. Tours begin every 20 minutes.
