RAPID CITY. The journey taken by local history is exactly what this museum traces, from the region's prehistoric characteristics to its present-day happenings. Exhibits are divided into four primary collections, which articulate the cultural flavor of the Western Great Plains. They include geology and archaeology, the presence of the Lakota Sioux, and the introduction and contributions of early settlers. A substantial collection of Native American artifacts also begs browsing. A gift shop is available, and a brief film introduces the entire facility.

RAPID CITY. Veterans, aircraft aficionados, and young boys are among the biggest fans of this museum, which showcases a variety of fighters and bombers. Two dozen planes feed their fascination, as do a variety of exhibits that detail aviation. Representative aircraft include a B-52 bomber, a B-25 Mitchell used by General Eisenhower, a C-47 cargo plane, and a B-1 bomber. Bus tours take visitors onto the base and add in more on-location attractions than the museum can provide.
