We love the Isle of Palms, South Carolina. People are tremendously friendly! We rented a condo for the week on the beach with a pool. We just had a lot of family time together and Charleston, South Carolina was only about 25 minutes away. Our kids are 3 1/2 years old and 18 months old. It was much easier than we thought it was going to be.

Beaufort SC - antebellum homes, horsedrawn carriages, water front park, art galleries, beaches, boating! Just stop and admire the spanish moss trimmed live oaks & smell the aroma of pluff mud. Yes, it may remind you of Charleston or Savannah - BUT with less traffic, less crime & more southern hospitality!

Destin FL is the most beautiful place to vacation...the beach is clean, the sand is white and the water is emerald green. We are called the emerald coast, the beach is kid friendly, family friendly if you have never been here you should come and you will see just how beautiful the gulf of mexico is on the beaches of Destin. The best and fresh seafood, best steaks anywhere! I have lived around the world, Italy, Hawaii, Tampa, FL but the best beaches are in Destin FL

Savannah, Ga. is the best southern city to visit. It's charm and hospitality will have you coming back for more. The architecture of the old buildings is gorgeous and the history you obtain from the tours is so amazing and informative. The different types of cuisine you can experience from good 'ol southern cooking to seafood dishes or any type of ethnic dishes are carefully prepared to tantalize any palate. If you have visited Savannah, please do. The accomodations range from the simplest of hotels to classy hotels like The Mansion, depending on your preferences. Tybee Island is a very serene beach town to visit. It is natural therapy. Problems just seem to temporarily disappear once you set foot on the island and the locals there are so friendly and helpful. I've been to Savannah and Tybee numerous times as well as Charleston, S.C., where I lived for a year and Savannah/Tybee is my pick by far. Charleston has alot of charm and is beautiful but Savannah just seems to draw me back time after time like I'm supposed to be there.

Barbara in Mi, I may live in the midwest, but my heart belongs to Savvannah and Tybee Island. My husband and I have been visiting since 1999. I would move here in a heart beat. I love the history and the charm of Savannah. I find the the stess of everyday life melts away, once I step on the beach on Tybee!!!!!!

Charleston is wonderful. My family lived there during my daughters' "growing up" years, so we have a wonderful soul connection to the low country. My next door neighbors were native Charlestonians, and I could not ask for nicer folks. We looked after each other's children, we had oyster roasts in our back yards, there was always a smile waiting for me if I needed to pop next door for anything, we shared stories that are unforgettable..I would love to take my family (including my grandchildren now) back to the low country and recapture that wonderful feeling once again!

I nominated Union Parish,La. as a place to visit or to consider moving to: I moved from rural Southern NJ to tiny Spearsville,La. March 2009. I found my new home on line; a 100 year Victorian old bank repo on 7 acres with a 2 car garage, studio apartment and stocked fishing pond- priced at $38,500!!! This tiny community of less than 150 souls are the nicest people I have ever met any where in my life! Think Mayberry only smaller :) I was born and raised in Decatur,Alabama...met my husband in the USMC Beaufort,S.C.- moved to NJ 1982- I have Acadian maternal family all along the Cajun gulf coast; real estate is still way too high there. I am disabled with M.S.- My husband retired from NJ Law enforcement Oct. 2008; we wanted to retire south as the cold damp Northern winters are too much for me to take any longer. Union Parish and particularly the citizens of Spearsville welcomed us with unbelievable kindness and open arms. If you really want to escape the rat race, visit this hill country of extreme northern Louisiana. And, please stop and eat at the all you can eat seafood buffet in Spearsville,La. called Hollis Seafood; a true southern culinary delight!

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC. It is difficult to know a true Charlestonion since people come all the time but seldom leave. Charleston is known for it's Southern Hospitality. Charleston offers charming historic houses, beautiful beaches, world class medical centers and landscaped plantation gardens. Charleston is a very cultural city, it is known for it's history and it's arts. Charleston has temperate year around weather. Charleston is especially known for many top notch restaurants. Charleston is the friendliest and best mannered city! We invite everyone to our beautiful city and know that you will not be dissappointed.

I was raised in a wheat field in MT and now live in OR near the ocean. My daughter lives in GA and I would move to Savannah or Key West in a moment if there was a job waiting! (Anyone need a seasoned retail store manager?!?) I went to college in Texas and was able to see some of South then. I would love to live the small-town, church picnic, know my neighbors life-style.

Born and raised in Wisconsin. Moved to Atlanta 35 years ago and moved to Cincinnati, Nashville, back to Atlanta and am now in Orlando. I love Savannah, riding an open air tour bus all over the squares, is like being transported back in time. I t's absolutely breath taking. It's very relaxing, fun shopping great food, friendly people and beautiful city. The South deals with the heat the way the North deals with the cold, we just do!

I was born and still live in the North, but the only time I'm happy is when my family and I go to Beaufort,SC and Fripp Island. It is so laid back.Plenty of places to find great food.Great beaches and the fishing isn't bad either.Your close to Charleston,Hilton Head and Savannah ,if you can't find enough to do. The Low Country is the best !

My choice of Galveston Texas which is Number 20 on the List I see, is a nice place local and mere hours away for me. I saw the vanishing of much of the homes in Hurricane Ike last year, as did all of us. Our local news in Houston television still talks of Hurricane recovery DAILY even though it has been over 8 months ago now. But Galveston just celebrated a BIRTHday for coming back. And the Galveston kids created a Film of their plight in Ike. There is lots more to do, Galveston was on Good Morning America yesterday the first day of Hurricane Season June 1st saying it is still in the Hurricane Ike recovery, but also we locals are hearing how many came to SEE the Hurricane damage as a close vacation spot this year, with the economy as it is. Guess we are having a Staycation time instead of Vacation time ! But still in the midst of all this, my heart is in my neighborhood and we always vacation close to home, and Galveston is always wonderful for a few days of beauty and serenity and hearing the waves and seeing the Gulf and eating some wonderful fresh seafood and finding shells. . . More than naming just a Place, a town, is the broader idea of an area and all that is around it, within reach. There is the Galveston beach and NASA and the Amusement Rides at Kemah Boardwalk. And not much further is the San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship of Texas and the Houston Zoo and the Museum of Natural History with the Terra Cotta Warriors right now, all these not real far one from the other, all considered to be done in a vacation. All work for just 1 day or even a week or longer. Especially the walks along the beach with your feet in the Gulf of Mexico. . . ... yes, I am happy I was born here just hours away from all of this and still calling these old familiar places Vacation spots. I love Big Bend and lots of open Texas land and the hidden not-travelled-often roads that abound to get you to the places you wish to explore.

I am a "BOI" (Born on the Islander) and, as such, know the beauty and history of Galveston Island. One thing not mentioned is the food! The seafood is just so fresh and you can't beat a shrimp po-boy on the wharf. You can watch as the shrimpers bring in their catch and you KNOW you can't get any fresher seafood! The charbroiled shrimp at Gaido's is an island favorite and there are many restaurants to satisfy even the most picky eater. While we all lament the toll taken by Hurricane Ike, the Island is coming back. We need your presence (and your $$$) but, rest assured, you visit will be a rewarding one!

Technically, I think DC, MD, and WV are considered "Mid Atlantic" states. I have traveled much of the South and every part of it was wonderful, but I am always thrilled to get back to the glorious mountains of West Virginia. If we had a view of the ocean, I would never have to leave home!

I live in the first settlement in CA, San Diego (1769) Not what is considered a southern town, though it is the farthest south in CA. I lived in Atlanta, GA for a couple of years, and the history, the southern mansions were all very interesting, however the humidity, and heat were terrible. I have traveled through 49 of the 50 states. There are beautiful places all over out country.

We who live here in the South agree the humidity is bad, but if you come and live here. . . then you will get more and more used to it ! : ) The weather reports nightly on the television and always we wish to know what the humidity will be. I can always get to Galveston Island in a few hours and with the Gulf wind blowing and the water waves cooling me, I easily forget all about the humidity. It is how I found to chase it totally away. I have travelled Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kansas and found beautiful places I saw as great vacation spots in every State. I agree with you that we actually have a beautiful Country, guess that was an appropriate song title so many years ago for us: America the Beautiful !!!

We aren't beach people so San Antonio is our great getaway. It's lazy laid back ambience is perfect for us. Walking along the River Walk and stopping in at one of the quaint shops is a wonderful way to while away a day. The choice of eateries in San Antonio encompasses every type of food and it's all great. I love going to the marketplace, La Villita, by trolley car. There's just so much to do and so much to see!

My father was Navy for 26 years. I have lived and traveled all over the usa and the south. Born in Hawaii and lived in Florida, Texas, Virginia(did not like it there)Tennessee etc..........I live in a small economically depressed area now in Pine Bluff, Ar. I am sad that I am stuck here after all my travels and living in great places. I always thought Norfolk, Va was the worst place to live but Pine Bluff is a close second.

Unfortunately, the only time I viisted Savannah was about 15 years ago for my mother's 80th birthday. We stayeed at a high quality bed and breakfast. About three hours after arriving I was robbed in the lighted parking lot by a criminal at gunpoint to my head and had my mother's and my life threatened. We were lucky to get away with our lives and never got back our purses, money, and precious family jewelry stolen that night! I don't wish to ever return to Savannah. The police were absolutely NO HELP. I had to come back to the Tallahassee police to get counseling and help! No Savannah for me. Crime was covered up and ignored.
