4. Oasis Beer Garden

MENLO PARK.   Commonly known as "The O" by Stanford students, this oasis serves tasty pizzas and real burgers cooked just the way you like 'em – rare, medium, or well-done. A favorite is the patty melt, a 1½-pound monster served with fries. Diners sit at long tables, where they take in televised sports or check out their companions indulging in carnivorous habits. This is my favorite place to get a burger, hang out, or drink a couple of beers. Although I am far past my college days, it was good then and it's still great today.

I've been frequenting the "O" for almost 30 years. It's very friendly and comfortable. Nice patio outside. Great burgers and good selection of brews. Every type of person in the universe including children. It's an institution.
