MENLO PARK. A family-owned and -operated establishment, Feldman's is actually two stores in one. A vast selection of books in the front stops you in your tracks, but walk farther, through the courtyard, and into a second building. Books showcased in this part of the store are all previously owned, and many are no longer in print and are quite rare. The selection is tremendous, and the owners are laid-back and knowledgeable. Plus, prices are affordable – what more can you ask for?

MENLO PARK. This interesting shop and gallery has a wide array of tribal art and one-of-a-kind artifacts from out-of-the-way places, but the real stars are antiques from Third World countries. Neolithic pots, elm horseshoe chairs, apothecary chests, and first-century stone bodhisattvas combine with displays of rare Baltic amber to form an exotic collection of moderately priced and museum-quality pieces.

MENLO PARK. Kepler's Books and Magazines is one of the area's most famous bookstores. In the 1960s, it was a favorite of politically minded writers and artists, and the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia even worked here at one time. Today, the bookstore continues to help foster young writers and to promote established ones. If you want a book that isn't on the shelf, just let the sales staff know and they'll order it for you. Next door is a small coffee shop where you can peruse the latest addition to your library.

SAN MATEO. In a bookstore with a motto stating "mystery, crime and detective fiction for readers of all ages from the cradle to the grave," you would expect to find fascinating ambience – and you get just that! Many of the salespeople are so devoted to the genre that they appear to have stepped out of an Agatha Christie book themselves. Since a number of significant mystery writers live in the area, author signings are a regular occurrence.

MENLO PARK. For over 25 years Stephen Miller has clothed naked floors with beautiful, antique, handmade rugs. The selection is as intense as the colors, and clients can choose from tribals, Aubussons, and needlepoints from Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, China, and Nepal. The manner in which rugs are displayed is theater itself – these rug merchants know how to present their treasures. Smaller accessories like kilm pillows are also sold.
