13. 24 Hours of LeMons

The Buzz -- The 24 Hours of LeMons, the national endurance racing series for cars costing $500 or less, arrives for the first time at the Reno-Fernley Raceway in Fernley, NV. Over two days of racing, teams take on exploding gaskets, fried alternators, and wild on-track action in order to take home glorious cash prizes—paid out in canvas sacks of nickels. Drivers are routinely tarred and feathered, forced to run three-legged races, and required to paint serene nature scenes on the hoods of their race cars. The most offensive team of the weekend is voted off the track and their car is crushed with a 20-ton excavator.
