We visited Maymont on a regular basis years ago when we lived in the Richmond area. Having moved back to Northern Virginia this past winter after 12 years away, we made Maymont one of the first places we visited. We’ve lived all over the United States and must say that Maymont is one of the most unique venues – especially so considering it is a free attraction. The gardens are spectacular and provide a great backdrop for both the professional and casual photographer. Lots of shade trees, grassy open fields, and benches make this a PERFECT place for a picnic, Frisbee, bocce ball, kite flying, etc. History enthusiasts will appreciate the historic house museum and carriage collection. One cautionary note – there is a lot of ground to cover at Maymont and especially so if walking, which includes up and down hills, steps ascending and descending the gardens, and various foot trails throughout. (A pair of comfortable walking or hiking shoes is highly recommended.) In short, the majestic Maymont should top every guest to the Commonwealth Capital Cities list of places to visit.
