6. Mayowood Mansion

ROCHESTER.   This elegant mansion, once home to three generations of Rochester's most high-profile family, sits southwest of downtown, surrounded by private gardens and 15 beautifully manicured acres. The 48-room home, open to the general public, features original antique furnishings, as well as personal effects once belonging to Dr. Charles H. Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic. The holiday season is a special time for Mayowood since its caretakers dress the estate in spectacular lights and decorations.
