ROCHESTER. In the late 19th century, unhappy with the medical practices of their day, Drs. Charles and William Mayo created a novel organization in which myriad specialists worked as a team to investigate, diagnose, and treat patients' problems. This system would eventually change the field of medicine forever. Today, the Mayo Clinic boasts 30 buildings and more than 1900 doctors and residents-in-training. Among the Clinic's more noteworthy buildings are the historic Plummer Building (1928), Rochester Methodist and St. Mary's (1889) Hospitals, and the Gonda Building, the so-called "front door of the Mayo Clinic." The spectacular Rochester Carillon, in the Plummer Building, hosts free concerts at noon and 7pm Wednesdays and Fridays. Free guided and self-guided tours of various buildings and the grounds are available year-round.
