EDITOR REVIEW: ROME. This museum traces the history of Native American tribes that once called the region home. It occupies a 19th-century plantation house that was the former residence of Cherokee tribal leader Major Ridge. Today, the structure is a National Historic Landmark. The museum shares the history of the Cherokee, Creek and Mississippian tribes and charts their resettlement to reservations during the dark days of the Trail of Tears. Chieftains Museum also offers an educational and emotional survey of the history and culture of America's first people.
