   EDITOR REVIEW:

ROME.   This famed landmark had its beginnings after the Civil War when James Noble, an Englishman, moved his family to town, opened an ironworks, and led an initiative to improve the town's water supply. The result was this substantial brick tower, built in 1871. The next year, a Boston-made clock was purchased to crown the edifice. Visible from downtown, the tower has been a source of pride for years and symbolizes the area's renewal after the Civil War. The tower was restored in 1995 and a museum added inside. Today, visitors can tour the tower, learn about its construction and efforts to bring water to town, and see the clock's inner workings.
