This vast gathering of museums boasts some of the world's most important relics. Extensive collection of Egyptian and Etruscan artifacts, Greco-Roman sculptures dating back as early as the first century BC, numerous archeological findings, and, of course, the legendary Raphael rooms and Sistine Chapel decorated by Michelangelo. Free entrance the last Sunday of the month (9:00am-2:00pm), with last entry 90 minutes before doors close.
From Monday to Saturday, last entry is 2 hours before closure time (i.e. 4:00pm). Metro: stations Ottaviano-Musei Vaticani; Cipro. Bus: 49. Tram: 19.

Fabulous collection; poor logistics. Traffic is directed in only one direction. Can not walk back, or retrace steps. Requires more walking and climbing than necessary. Sistine Chapel a disappointment. So many people, lights kept low. Diffiicult to see frescos. Michelangelo's ceiling frescos much smaller than pictures portray. Raphael Rooms a treasure but was given wrong directions by Museum staff 4 times., Read up on frescos and who is pictured and you will really enjoy them. Cafateria OK. Is only place in Rome I found Pepsi.
