This monolithic basilica, the second largest in Rome, was commissioned during the fourth century by Emperor Constantine on what is reportedly the Apostle Paul's burial site. Known as "the Apostle to the Gentiles," Paul's epistles and missionary travels were instrumental in the spread of the Gospel message. The church was nearly destroyed by fire in 1823 but has since undergone significant restoration. BUS: C6, 23, 670, 761, 766 or 769.
