Il Bacaro is romantic and small, and each table is adorned with dripping candles. Some of the best Italian wines available can be found on their wine list. The spinach risotto makes a great starter, followed by a beef fillet or venison dish. There are some vegetarian options too. The white walls are sparingly decorated with simple frescoes. In summer there are some tables outside surrounded by trellised plants. Reservations recommended. Metro: Spagna.

We found this restaurant almost by accident during our last visit to Rome, and arrived without a reservation. The manager and staff could not have been more helpful in accommodating us; there was only room outside, it was raining and although we were fine underneath the umbrellas, the waitress had to brave the wet weather to serve us, which she did with enormous cheerfulness and charm. The meal itself was absolutely delicious. We especially appreciated the primi taster plates, a very nice idea. We are in Rome again in a few days' time and will most definitely paying another visit to Il Bacaro. Excellent.
