This castle, built on Dolomite rock, served as a fortress. Archbishop Gebhard commissioned the site in 1077 to protect Papal interest during Empire and Church conflicts. Hohensalzburg saw constant rebuilding and additions through the 15th century. Architectural features include cannon bastions, towers, and ammunitions depots.
