This castle, built on Dolomite rock, served as a fortress. Archbishop Gebhard commissioned the site in 1077 to protect Papal interest during Empire and Church conflicts. Hohensalzburg saw constant rebuilding and additions through the 15th century. Architectural features include cannon bastions, towers, and ammunitions depots.   (© 10Best)

Hohensalzburg is one of the most beautiful castles I saw in my life. It is the biggest in size in Europe, and dominates a magnificent city. On its site - http://www.hohensalzburgcastle.com there are photos that show the castle from different angles. It is very different from the classical UK castles, it has a sense of personality.
