Boasting a special legacy as the home of the Alamo, San Antonio is entrenched in history shaped by Spanish colonial forces, Native Americans, fighting settlers and European immigrants, but don't mistake it for a town steeped in the past. Equipped with generous green spaces, pedestrian pathways and modern attractions, the city is a graceful blend of old and new. Among the first places visitors stop is the famous military fort where Texan forces resisted the Mexican Army for 12 days. Today visitors find treasured possessions, such as Davey Crockett's buckskin vest and William B. Travis's ring, on display inside the Alamo and may watch a fascinating film created by the History Channel in the onsite museum. Thanks to San Antonio's pleasant, sunny climate, outdoor attractions are popular. Situated below ground level, the downtown River Walk features pedestrian-friendly shopping and sidewalk cafes and offers views of notable sites such as the Pioneer Flour Mill, Tower Life Building, fine homes in the historic King William neighborhood and the Arneson River Theatre.
