4. Big Bear Solar Observatory

BIG BEAR CITY.   One of only six solar observatories in the world, Big Bear sits on an island in the center of a lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. Here, the facility enjoys ideal conditions for gazing at the heavens. Airflow is smooth and without turbulence, ground distortion and light pollution are minimal, and skies are typically clear. The observatory, built in 1965 by the California Institute of Technology, is now maintained by the New Jersey Institute of Technology.   (© 10Best)
