MISSION BAY. Among the best outdoor dining in Southern California, this resort restaurant’s patio overlooks picturesque Mission Bay, a view that almost makes the food secondary. Fortunately, the food stands up quite well to scrutiny. Seafood with Asian/Californian flair is the focus – citrus marinated swordfish, soy glazed salmon, California-style cioppino, wood-roasted sea bass or scallops – all paired with sides such as truffled parmesan fries, coconut sticky rice, and avocado-grapefruit chimichurri. The “Chef’s Tour of Local Fish and Shellfish” menu is fabulous. Inside, the designers relaxed the elegant décor with an unexpected motif: monkeys.

LA JOLLA. Blue Coral, from the creators of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, excels on every front. The interior design is gorgeous, from mosaic walls to cobalt blue glassware – it’s all exceptionally pleasant to the eye and mind. The seasonal, seafood-centered menu might feature vodka-cured peppered salmon, yellowfin tuna with wasabi buerre blanc, Chilean sea bass with blood orange-butter sauce, or grilled mahi mahi with lemon caper aioli. Even dessert is superlative, and there are 60 wines by the glass, more than 70 vodkas (several infused in-house with fresh fruits and herbs), vodka flights, and unique cocktails.

GASLAMP QUARTER. Definitely one of San Diego's standout restaurants, this steak and seafood house draws rave reviews from regulars and visitors alike. Unwind with a cocktail amidst gleaming hardwoods and mosaics that lend a 1940s era feel, and be treated like part of the upper crust of society by courteous staff all while awaiting something exceptional from the kitchen. Something like their signature roasted beet salad with toasted goat cheese, an iced seafood platter, the bone-in ribeye steak, teriyaki glazed mahi mahi, garlic meatloaf, or grilled swordfish.

GASLAMP QUARTER. Stylish, upscale Osetra is centered around a three story tower housing an award-winning wine collection. An oyster bar, caviar bar and ice bar are focal points on the ground floor, with an elegant dining room upstairs. Order a few rounds of tapas, such as baby lamb chops, a 3 oz filet mignon, mini crab cakes, and lobster mashed potatoes. Or stick to the regular menu, a seasonally-changing roster of dishes like house-made lobster and crab ravioli in asparagus-saffron cream sauce, seared scallops over squid ink risotto, seared sea bass with a citrus tomato emulsion, and steaks.

DEL MAR. Fabulous ocean views, a lively bar scene, an award-winning wine list, and a well conceived menu have catapulted Pacifica Del Mar to the top of the metro San Diego restaurant heap. The menu is varied, emphasizing seafood dishes such as arborio rice crusted halibut, salt and pepper prawns with udon noodles and black bean-garlic sauce, and broiled lobster. The house-cured ribeye is fantastic, too. Wednesday’s half-price martini night is well attended – it’s the perfect time to try out one of their creative cocktails, like the Kiwi-Tini, Pomerita or Blueberrry Mojito.

If you're an angler and catch something yourself, Point Loma Seafoods will fillet and smoke it for you.
