5. Hillcrest

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK.   Though a relatively small area, Hillcrest makes for some great shopping. This area is famous for being the center of the city's gay and lesbian population. A number of shops selling everything from vintage wares to chic home decor dot the neighborhood, as do restaurants and coffee shops. A hardware store, used book store, hat shop and other specialty shops are great afternoon diversions. Street and lot parking are available. You can begin your shopping at the center of the area, the corner of University and Fifth, and fan out from there.   (© 10Best)
