9. Venissimo

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK.   Venissimo maintains a stock of some 120 cheeses, with selections changing on an almost daily basis. Since opening in 2003, they have featured close to 1000 cheeses, from abbaye de belloc to zuleta. You can find cheese made from cow’s milk, sheep or goat’s milk, even Venezuelan beaver’s milk. OK, maybe not that last one! The bottom line is, the owners seek out such a fantastic array of rare, obscure, artisan cheeses that the store is a magnet for chefs and gourmands from all over SoCal. Frequent tastings are scheduled at the Del Mar store, and Venissimo is a regular participant in tasting events around town.   (© 10Best)
