HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. Start the day at Bread and Cie with a bowl of homemade granola, or a blackberry-banana muffin and a cup of gourmet coffee. At lunch, the humble sandwich goes upscale, with combinations like roast beef, horseradish cream, watercress and orange-marinated red cabbage on sourdough, and pesto, gouda, tomato and arugula on levain. Regulars return for sweet treats, too, like brownies, lemon-ginger or pecan-apricot scones, and chocolate chip or oatmeal walnut cookies.

PACIFIC BEACH. This Hawaiian-themed eatery is revered for its hearty portions, low prices and amiable atmosphere. Late-risers appreciate that breakfast is served from open to close, and burgers get raves as well. If you're lucky, you'll snag a table outside, where you can enjoy an inspiring view of the beach. Don't let long lines deter you – they move fast, and fellow line-mates are inevitably friendly and chatty.

OLD TOWN. Something of a local legend, Perry's Café has been around for years and years, and still has the decor to prove it. Dated look notwithstanding, the old school diner vibe, quick service and hearty American breakfast is sure to win you over. The food is simple, abundant and cheap, so you can stuff your belly without emptying your wallet. Try the pancakes, huevos ranchos, or the standard two over-easy with bacon and hash browns. Lunch is similarly priced and proportioned.

GASLAMP QUARTER. People dart in hip and casual Café Lulu for lunch or a jolt of caffeine throughout the afternoon. As the evening descends, it takes on an arty, bohemian coffeehouse-at-night atmosphere: sticky desserts, sweet coffee concoctions, cold beer, and hookah. On weekends it's a popular destination after the bars close. Belly dancers and music liven things up on Sundays.

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. This funky neighborhood café serves up hearty breakfasts of French toast and eggs, but also offers a number of healthy vegetarian items. Super friendly owner and staff really make the experience memorable. A favorite with locals, who drop by for a cuppa joe and a chat, or a quick meal. A good place to take the kids. Whoopi Goldberg washed dishes here before becoming an international star.

PACIFIC BEACH. As you might guess from its name, this lovely café specializes in omelets perfectly prepared with a wide variety of ingredients. The famous dozen-egg omelet comes topped with chili and a pile of potatoes on the side - eat it all and you pay a fraction of the original price and win a free T-shirt! Of course, there are other options, like pancakes and waffles, and Mexican-style breakfast burritos.
