8. Slanted Door

EMBARCADERO.   High ceilings and awesome Bay views establish a unique atmosphere at this well-received waterfront venue. Style and spectacle are grounded, though, by Slanted Door's authentic country Vietnamese dishes, which get a California kick from local ingredients. Taste the results in the catfish claypot, crispy peppercorn duck, shaking beef, spicy squid and mesquite-grilled pork chops. Spring rolls also come highly recommended, and great cocktails and scrumptious desserts are worth indulging in. And don't forget to keep an eye out for celebrities!   (© 10Best)

Reservations are hard to come by at James Beard award nominee Charles Phan's acclaimed modern-Vietnamese Slanted Door. If you can't snag one, head to Phan's take-out window, Out of the Door, in the main hall of the Ferry Building for portable versions of his signature dishes, such as steamed rice-flour buns stuffed with lean spiced chicken, or a Vietnamese-inspired sweet-and-sour salad of grapefruit, candied pecans, purple cabbage, and jicama. I wanted to try this place for a long time but they kept moving around. The ambiance is great and the food unique but delightful. Make reservations if you can't make it there early! I would definitely come back!

Very crowded and noisy, but for those seeking a high-energy place, this is it. Probably some of the most unique dishes I have experienced, but all very good. Shrimp rolls were excellent, as were the mahi and tuna. Very Asian, but served with an American flair. As with most SFO restaurants, the desserts were awesome. If you don't mind the noise, this is the kind of place you won't see very often. HINT: Go early or late and you might get seated right away. Other than that, reservations are a must.
