MILL VALLEY. More than 1½ million people visit Muir Woods National Monument each year, and for good reason. The grove of coast redwoods has been protected for a century, and the amazing specimens rank among the tallest trees in the world. Some reach 252 feet, are 14 feet across, and are more than 1000 years old! Paved trails promise about an hour of strolling, while unpaved trails can occupy hikers for a full day or more. (© 10Best) Your travel plans should include a pilgrimage to Muir Woods National Monumnet, 12 miles north of San Francisco. Not just to worship the grove's venerable stands of coastal redwoods, but also to give thanks for the vision of three gentlemen: William Kent for donating the property to the government; President Theodore Roosevelt for designating the monument; and John Muir, patron saint of environmental preservation and the monument's namesake. We recommend going before 10 or after 4, when it's quiet and more conducive to proper contemplation.
